Once LD has prepared preliminary designs, he works with the boot artisans at the Rios of Mercedes factory in Mercedes, Texas to choose the specific leathers, colors, and even stitch patterns in designing each new Nigro’s Exclusive. And, since Nigro’s Exclusives from Olathe Boot are crafted in small batches, every single pair sold is something of a rare find.
The Olathe Boot Company – 145 Years of Cowboy Boot Tradition
The origins of the Olathe Boot Company date back to 1875, during some of the earliest times of the American Wild West, and begin with a lone cowboy riding into Kansas City from Colorado on his way toward one of the country’s busiest livestock hubs, the Kansas City Stockyards.
The cowboy visited a small shoe shop just a stone’s throw away from the stockyards and asked the shoemaker about making a custom pair of boots. He said his Civil War-style boots just weren’t cut out for life on the range. The cowboy wanted a pair of boots with a pointed toe to make it easier to slip into stirrups, raised heels to remain in them more securely, and a wide, scalloped edge to make them easier to put on. And, with that order, the cowboy boot as we know it today was born.
The Olathe Boot Company continued to grow as everyone from working cowboys to U.S. Presidents sought out a pair of true American cowboy boots. Throughout the later part of the 20th century the Olathe Boot Company passed through several different owners until the Rios of Mercedes Family of Brands purchased the company in 2001.
